New Strategies for the Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice. It significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality of elderly population. Over past 25–30 years intense effort basic research has advanced understanding relationship between pathophysiology AF atrial remodelling. Nowadays it clear that various forms remodelling (electrical, contractile structural) play crucial role initiating maintaining persistent permanent types AF. Unlike ventricular fibrillation, rapid ectopic firing originating from pulmonary veins re-entry mechanism may induce maintain (due remodelling) this complex arrhythmia. The present review presents discusses detail latest knowledge on Special attention paid novel concepts pharmacological targets presumably relevant drug treatment fibrillation.
